Young Roma from the TándEM programme of Fundación Secretariado Gitano participate in the European campaign

The campaign "Real People, Real Skills" is promoted by the European Commission within the events of the European Year of Skills, and tells the stories of people who have changed their working future by improving their qualifications and professional skills.

Their testimonies are very inspiring and highlight the importance of training and employment for Roma youth.

Sara, Juan, Antonio and Alejandro have contributed to this campaign their experience as student-workers of the TándEM programme, subsidised by the State Public Employment Service in the framework of the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan through the European Next Generation funds. These four young people are part of the group of 125 young Roma people who on 15 November 2023 began their training in alternation with employment at Fundación Secretariado Gitano.

“I took the course ‘Communication in Digital Environments’ as part of the TándEM Programme by the Secretariado Gitano Foundation to learn something new and get a job. Thanks to my classmates, teachers, and coordinator, I’ve learned a lot during the three-month training. I’ve improved my communication, organisation, and administration skills. It’s helped me grow and I’d encourage everyone to follow their desire to learn.” Juan, Madrid

“I wanted to learn everything I could about Digital Communication Technology, so I took part in the Fundación Secretariado Gitano's TándEM employment and training programme. I am proud to be one of more than 100 young people from all over Spain who have taken up the opportunity to find good and stable jobs through courses and on-the-job training offered by the Foundation and create better futures for ourselves. I’ve learnt about social networks, photos, engagement and copywriting. I’ve particularly enjoyed the interactive classes where we completed exercises and then presented them to the class with instant feedback from which I feel I learnt the most. Be attentive, make the most of each class, take notes, ask questions and put everything you learn into practice.” Alejandro, Lugo.

“I wanted a stable job so I took a course in solar panel installation and maintenance with the TándEM programme from the Secretariado Gitano Foundation. I spent hours studying the theory and practice of the trade and I’ve learned so much. Learning a trade and progressing professionally has made me feel better about myself. My advice is to be patient and stay motivated.” Antonio, León.”

“Driven by a desire to be useful to my community and to grow both professionally and personally, I’m training on the job as a community promoter in health and gender equality at the Fundación Secretariado Gitano as part of the TándEM Training Programme. I’m also studying for a higher degree in social integration at the same time. My new skills help with various tasks and make me more efficient and I feel like I am flourishing in my role. Stay motivated and don’t be afraid to make mistakes, you can achieve what you’re looking for.” Sara, Teruel.

Through the TándEM programme, Fundación Secretariado contributes to the training of unemployed young people and at the same time provides many of them with their first work experience through a 9-month training contract. In total, 125 young people from all over Spain are being trained while working in different specialities: Solar Panels, Gardening, Catering, Building Maintenance, Energy Efficiency, in classroom mode. The specialities in online mode are Administration in NGOs, Communication in Digital Environments and Health and Labour Equality Promoters.
