First National Working Group:

"Taking care – the users and services involved

Italy (30th May 2005)

Conclusions

During the workshop, based on the comparison between arising problems, difficulties and good practices, some particularly relevant points were highlighted.

Very clearly it was expressed the need for the services to be fully aware of the risk and reject any “assistentialism” logic.

That with the aim of avoiding a lack of opportunities for the Roma population to achieve an improving autonomy.  In order to build up those pathways, it is common understanding that the Roma should be provided with a process of guidance and mediation so as to allow them correctly access to services and regularly use.

This process is necessary not only to make the Roma citizen become closer to the services but also to provide the same service operators with the cultural instruments and knowledge that are necessary to fully welcome the Roma without incurring in any prejudice.
