The
overall objective of this programme is to meet the treatment,
prevention and social inclusion needs of the drug-dependent Roma
population through the creation of services focusing on drug dependency
mediation and intervention.
The
term treatment needs refers to situations that are currently blocking
the mainstreaming and advancement of the Roma community in the
different fields mentioned earlier (lack of housing, substance
abuse, little or no training, precarious employment…) and
to the difficulties encountered in making use of resources due
to a lack of information or a lack of flexibility in gaining access
to them.
Prevention
is one of the key issues that needs to be approached in drug intervention
work precisely because for many people prevention is a foreign
concept; immediate results are what matter and middle or long-term
gains are usually not valued. It is essential to stress the idea
that prevention is everyone’s responsibility. The family
and the cultural values nurtured therein can become an effective
agent of prevention.
Special
importance is also put on the inclusion of those undergoing treatment
and of the young people taking part in prevention exercises and
in training and employment counselling initiatives as a key aspect
favouring social inclusion making use of both public resources
as well as those of the entity itself.
